We are greatly saddened to report that Jean-Pierre Protzen, an ARF-affiliated faculty member and enthusiastic participant in the ARF community, passed away in Bern, Switzerland on January 10, 2021. His wife, Elsbeth, died a few days prior.
Jean-Pierre was born in Switzerland in 1934 and trained as an architect before joining the faculty of the Department of Architecture at UC Berkeley in 1968. He served on many ARF committees and co-edited the Explorations in the Pisco Valley monograph published as ARF Contributions Series #63 in 2005. He was closely involved with the Institute for Andean Studies founded by John Rowe (Anthropology) and served as the vice-president and then the president for a total of 12 years. Jean-Pierre's elegance and warmth were a welcome presence at many ARF events and he will be sorely missed.
