In response to urgent calls to address systemic racism in all spheres of institutional life, a group of archaeology centers based in the United States have come together to identify avenues for concrete change. Since July, center directors and representatives have been meeting via Zoom to consider ways to move archaeology forward towards greater diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Standing for Racial Justice and Equity
We mourn with millions across the country and the world over the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many others. As is plainly evident, entrenched institutional racism and white-supremacist violence threaten the foundations of our democracy and our security as free citizens. We must also reflect on how these murders reflect larger patterns of anti-Black, anti-Brown, anti-Indigenous, and anti-transgender oppression.
Congratulations to Professor William White on receiving the Hellman Fellow Fund
The award is in support of Professor White's research and his proposal, Digitizing Black Heritage through Collaborative Archaeology. The Hellman Fellows fund was created by a generous gift from the late Mr. F. Warren Hellman, a distinguished alumnus and friend of Cal, and his late wife Chris Hellman to support early career faculty who have shown evidence of their promise for distinction in research. Their children recently decided to expand the program at Berkeley by creating an endowment and inviting other donors to participate, establishing the Society of Hellman Fellows.
