"Research Computing in Support of Archaeological Investigations at UC Berkeley" presented by Nicholas Tripcevich (ARF), Christopher Hoffman, Aaron Culich (Research IT, UC Berkeley)
Technology support at UC Berkeley has recently been reorganized and provides direct links between researchers and IT staff focused on research computing. This talk presents an overview of these changes and several examples that demonstrate how research computing technologies are being applied to archaeological research on campus. We’ll begin with a brief overview of these resources and services, and we’ll discuss some grant programs as well as some labs and technology services available to Cal researchers that you may not be aware of. Next we’ll go into more detail on a photogrammetry and visualization system at the Hearst Museum for display of museum objects. We will wrap up by describing access to a remote desktop system that ARF researchers have access to that allows you to run windows software from any Mac, Windows, or Linux computer through a browser window. This system could be used for research projects and collaboration, or for teaching classes and workshops.
