Title: What's the Coolest Thing You've Ever Found?: Stories about Small Finds in Urban Contexts

Speaker: Dr. Leigh Anne Lieberman, Director of Strategic Partnerships, The Alexandria Archive Institute / Open Context

Abstract:
In recent years, the study of ancient artifacts has moved beyond straightforward typologies, descriptions, and quantifications. New approaches to the analysis of material culture - including methods of geospatial referencing, artifact agency, object biography, and statistical analysis of large datasets - have drawn attention to the myriad ways in which objects could be used and reused, deposited and redeposited in the ancient world. In this presentation, Dr. Leigh Anne Lieberman outlines just a few of the methods that characterize her work studying the artifacts at the Pompeii Archaeological Research Project: Porta Stabia, the American Excavations at Morgantina: Contrada Agnese Project, and the Tharros Archaeological Research Project.
