TITLE: Shaping An Anthropological Research Path In Diverse Settings: A Personal Perspective

ARF Brownbag | October 13 | 12:10-1 p.m. | Virtual event

SPEAKER:
Dr. Seetha N. Reddy, Reddy Anthropology Consulting, Inc.

Sponsor: Archaeological Research Facility

Abstract:
Anthropology is one of the few fields that allows for flexibility in practice and research. Dr. Seetha Reddy will discuss how she shaped her anthropology career path using examples from her career to date. The talk will touch on a series of research projects including early urbanism in South Asia, hunter-gatherer adaptations and colonialism in California, as well as paleoethnobotanical and ethnographic studies in widely divergent settings.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Seetha N. Reddy, President of Reddy Anthropology Consulting, Inc., brings over 30 years of experience in anthropology in two countries (United States and India). Her anthropological interests include research of subsistence systems, settlement patterns, human behavior, environmental management, Spanish colonialism in California, racial equity and tribal engagement. Her archaeological work has included early urbanism in South Asia, research on hunter-gatherers and colonialism in California. As a paleoethnobotanist she has worked on materials from South India, Northwest India, Jordan, and throughout California. She has been doing ethnographic research since 1988; first in India and then in California. In India, Dr. Reddy has worked with traditional farming communities, migratory pastoral populations and hunter-gatherer populations on land use, settlement and subsistence related issues. Her ethnographic research in California has included conducting interviews with Native American Tribes and individuals and reporting findings related to traditional cultural land use and ethnographic significance of archaeological sites; identification and evaluation of tribal resources for California and Federal regulations; ethnographic and ethnohistoric context and reviews, and review of evidence for cultural affiliation of funerary objects from archaeological sites.

After working as a Principal Investigator and Project Manager for CRM companies for almost two decades, she is now the President of Reddy Anthropology Consulting, Inc. (RAC), a micro business that offers consulting services for ethnography, archaeology and paleoethnobotany.

Dr. Reddy has been involved in the archaeological community through various avenues. She is the editor of the Journal of California and Great Basin Anthropology (JCGBA, 2020-present) and was the editor of Proceedings of the Society for California Archaeology Annual Meetings for three years (2017-2020). She is on the editorial boards of two journals: Advances in Archaeological Practices and California Archaeology. She was appointed by the Society for American Archaeology Board in 2016 on a three-year term (2017-2020) as a committee member on the Excellence in Archaeological Analysis Award Committee. Over the years she has published in journals (JCGBA, Journal of Anthropological Archaeology, Journal of Wetland Archaeology and others), written and edited technical reports, and made contributions to chapters in edited books and technical reports. Dr. Reddy is the founder of Women in California Archaeology Committee, Society for California Archaeology, and served as President for five years and vice-chair for one year. She is also the founder of the recently unveiled Coalition Diversity in California Archaeology focused on providing support, advocacy and mentorship to underrepresented professionals in California.
