TITLE: Dissemination of Mayanist archaeology to a Maya audience in the age of COVID-19

ARF Brownbag | November 17 | 12:10-1 p.m. | Virtual event
SPEAKER: Esteban Mirón Marván, UC Berkeley Dept. of Anthropology
Sponsor: Archaeological Research Facility
About: I will talk about the preliminary results of my Stahl funded project, by which I have created two online platforms to share archaeological and epigraphical knowledge about the Classic Maya to a Maya-Ch’ol audience in their language. This is particularly important because Mayan Ch’ol language is closely related to the Classic Mayan written in epigraphic texts sculpted and painted thirteen centuries ago. The YouTube and Facebook platforms have been an effective way to disseminate the narratives created by the academics in the last century and as a tool to engage with Ch’ol individuals that want to have a voice over mayanist archaeological research and heritage management. It has reached thousands of Choles, and it has been well received, although the interactions tend to be individual and not in public forums. With the support of the Stahl grant I will continue to produce content in Ch’ol language and continue to foster dialogue about how we can make mayanist and Mexican archaeology less extractive.
