An Archaeology of Resistance: The Pueblo Revolt of 1680

This discussion will focus on the results of his dissertation research on the Pueblo Revolt era mesatop refuge of Tunyo (Black Mesa) at San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico. While the dissertation phase of research, revolving around drone mapping of the mesa, is complete, Joseph is moving into another phase of research, in collaboration with San Ildefonso Pueblo, its Tribal Historic Preservation Office and Anthropological Research, LLC, to document oral histories about this pivotal moment in Pueblo Indian history.
Dr. Joseph Aguilar is an enrolled member of San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico, and currently serves as an archaeologist with Bering Straits Native Corporation and is also the pueblo’s Deputy Tribal Historic Preservation Officer. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. His general research interests include Indigenous Archaeology, museums, landscape archaeology, and tribal historic preservation. He is currently working on exhibit and content development for several museums, including the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, the de Young Museum of Art in San Francisco, the Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum at Mesa Verde National Park, and for the School for Advanced Research in Santa Fe, NM.
