About: Black heritage sites and their stories, often viewed as a static monolith of the past that only centers Black trauma, are routinely mismanaged and misinterpreted. Informed by my ongoing collaborations with Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, the Friends of Allensworth non-profit, and the park’s descendant and steward communities; I consider the historical events, people, and places that have led me to today’s understanding of what a site of homecoming can be. This exit talk examines what it means to consider, compound, and negate Black life in the past, present, and future. I will highlight moments of listening throughout my dissertation journey that have informed my ability to collaborate with intention; bringing together previously collected archaeological data and material culture, interviews with descendant and other invested communities, archival literature, community-engaged scholarship practices, and future endeavors.
