Speaker: Mario Castillo, UC Berkeley Anthropology Department
April 5, 2023, 12:10 - 1 p.m.
Sponsor: Archaeological Research Facility
Abstract: Since at least the 1960s, the social property sector has been space for productive conversation between anthropological archaeologists and local and descendent peoples in the Mexican countryside. This presentation discusses one example from southern Querétaro and explains how concerns over land reform in Viente de Noviembre in ejido San Ildefonso Tultepec motivated study of the statutory designation and reallocation of arable territory in the region. The first part of the presentation discusses the project and explains the methodological approach developed to study the history of land reform . The second part traces how the statutory redesignation and allocation of arable territory impacted community-partners’ ancestors from the late 16th century to the Mexican Revolution.
