Representing the Study of Gender in Archaeology
with Ruth Tringham and Meg Conkey
In this presentation we will show one film and portions of another that each, in their historical context, have presented some of the issues in the study of gender in archaeology. On the one hand, we re-visit briefly the 2004 video made by Ruth Tringham on the occasion of a symposium to mark 20 years since the publication of an early publication on “Archaeology and the Study of Gender” (1984), entitled "Cultivating Thinking, Challenging Authority”. On the other hand, we primarily show, with some interventions, the award-winning 2019 film, “Their Story”, made by Sarah Cahlan as her Master's project for her MA at the UC-Berkeley School of Journalism. Our point here is to not only to share these representations but also to ask you to consider the effectiveness and impact of such representations, which range from humor to evidence-based interpretations, and how the visual representations themselves can “tell a story” of research and intellectual histories.
