How did the Pandemic Change Archaeological Field Schools? (William A. White, UC Berkeley Anthropology)

Archaeological field school is a rite of passage in the United States. Attending a field school is frequently required for many entry-level jobs with cultural resource management (CRM) firms and government agencies because field school is the closest most university students come to being a professional archaeologist. The Covid-19 pandemic wrought extensive changes on the entirety of academia. It also deeply impacted archaeological field schools. This talk is a qualitative discussion about the field school experience and the challenges created by the ongoing pandemic. Highlighting challenges and introducing solutions, it is hoped this lecture will contribute to ongoing discussions amongst archaeology instructors and graduate students about how they can change archaeological field schools to better serve university students.
