Prof. Edward M. Luby is director of the Museum Studies Program and professor of Museum Studies. Previously, Professor Luby served as Director and Chief Curator of the Global Museum from 2014 to 2018, where he worked to manage the museum through its “start-up” phase, including the creation of temporary storage spaces and the movement of virtually all the Museum’s collections; the development of the Museum’s new gallery, preservation facility, classroom, and Student Study Center; and oversight for the Museum’s inaugural exhibit, which opened April 2018. Prof. Luby remains as Chief Curator for the Global Museum.
Prof. Luby was formerly associate director of the Berkeley Natural History Museums at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to his position as associate director, Prof. Luby was special assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Research, also at the University of California, Berkeley, and director of the NAGPRA (Repatriation) Unit for the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology at U.C. Berkeley. Prof. Luby received his B.A from the University of Rochester, New York, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Stony Brook University, New York.
Prof. Luby’s recent research and professional development activities are in three overlapping areas: understanding and developing best practices for museums concerning their interactions with community or descent groups; collections-based museum research; and developing international museum professional exchange and training programs.
