This instrument was originally purchased to use in conjunction with ESRI ArcPad on a Windows Mobile device. With the deprecation of Windows Mobile this instrument is best used with Lasertech MapSmart for Android.
The APK for the older MapSmart v5.3 is available for use on Android 7 and 8 devices.
The first model of TripMate 850 purchased in 2009 had a firmware system that could not be upgraded and this model had problems with southern hemisphere latitudes (described in the review post below). We were sent a second one with the newer firmware that works globally. Thus, ARF's Tripmate 850 #1 is for northern latitude use only, Tripmate #2 works everywhere.
The Juno SB handheld uses the Windows Mobile® version 6.1 operating system.
Juno GPS units are lower cost units that are not ruggedized like the GeoXH units. Trimble estimates that they will provide 2-5m of accuracy. The principal advantage to the Juno over recreation GPS units such as Garmin is that you can use more sophisticated software like Arcpad and Terrasync to do GIS data logging in the field, and you can post-process the results using GPS Pathfinder Office or GPS Analyst.
This is a weatherproof 8 channel GPS receiver. It is too old to support WAAS correction so positional accuracy is approximately 5-10m. The Garmin 40 can store 250 waypoints and 20 routes. The unit requires four AA batteries and claims to run 20 hours on alkaline batteries. Weight: 9.5 oz with batteries.
With the use of the ARF's Garmin PC interface cable (RS232 serial port connector) you may download the points to ArcGIS.
The Garmin 12 GPS is a rugged 1990s 12 channel GPS. It uses four AA batteries. It is too old to include WAAS support so positional accuracy is conservatively ~5-10 meters. It can store 500 waypoints, 1024 track log points, and nine proximity waypoints.
These positions can be downloaded to a computer as XYZ locations using the Garmin PC Interface Cable (RS232), the ARF has one of these cables.
